Michgan morning

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Arrived Kalamazoo yesterday evening after a very long day in the airand airports. This is a pleasant moning. The sky is soft and hazy. The hotel is fairly quiet although the remaining guests from two weddings are stumbling about.  Attendees for Fabrications will begin trickling in soon and the mood should get lively.

Lynn and Kate are hanging the Blurred Boundaries show. The work looks good. There’s a lot of emphasis on surface and texture. The aesthetic is consistent across the selected works, making a cohesive exhibit. There are so many ways to jury a show. I wish I’d seen all the entries for this one. mystery. If photos are allowed, I will take some of the installation.

With a few hours to myself the plan is to relax, to get organized for the workshops that begin tomorrow and perhaps do some writing.

I’d hoped to do some computer work but either the telecom system here has firewalls that are in my way or my little laptop’s OS is obsolete. It is nice to have quiet time and a few hours with no obligations!

this little piece was made in 2004, I think. It would be nice to see it again, somewhere.

Hooray! the deadlines are met! early, sort of.

All three phases of my project for The Quilt Show are in. (Members can download them as .pdf files)

Images of three new pieces are off to the Curator for a traveling exhibition.

Now attention and focus can shift. There are lots of other items on my list.

taxes need to be amended

a writing project – edit!

preparation for Fabrications in a little over a month, this will be my 5th year there, I think. Repeat retreats are wonderful. It’s such a great opportunity to really work with people over time.

New work that has been on hold for too long. The human scale folding pieces have been on my mind for a couple of years now. It’s time to start working on them.

meanwhile, in the garden:

These dark red hollyhocks are out by the garden gate and visible from my large studio window. This is a good red.

Raspberries! the taste of summer, just beginning to ripen now.

Teasel. A volunteer in the East bed that we let grow, much to my dismay. It has taken over. The leaves are nice for sun printing and it is rather a statuesque plant, however…

It would be good to devote a day to digging out the young plants.

is it really Friday?

The week has flown by, this day is about to do the same. There’s been forward motion. This is a good thing.

  • the unpacking from my Iowa teaching trip is complete. (It was a wonderful 4 day workshop!),
  • The house is more or less restored to a livable space (it’s amazing what happens here in my absence)
  • works from the Sage exhibit are listed on my website, but I think some need to be re-photographed
  • my most recent museletter went out. To subscribe, click here.
  • taxes for 2008 are nearly done! hooray.
  • although the list of things I need to do keeps getting longer, maybe I am beginning to feel a sense of what passes for control in my life – for the first time since September, I think.

Registration for the next session of on-line classes is in full swing. Hope to see you there!

remembering summer

My opening at Sage last night was great fun. Attendance was steady, the work was well received. I enjoyed watching people look at the pieces and talk about them. It was gratifying to have a stranger realize she had seen an exhibit of mine some years ago. That work was large and hung soft. These pieces are all small and mounted. Many incorporate techniques I was not using the last time my work was on view here. To her eye and memory, there was a connection, a visual and conceptual link.

It was good to see the art in a space that has color, is used and occupied throughout the week. It’s a different experience than the white walls of a gallery or museum.
