January 2020

“In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus (/ˈdʒeɪnəs/ JAY-nəs; Latin: IANVS (Iānus), pronounced [ˈjaːnʊs]) is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past.

Here we are at the beginning of a new year. It’s been my habit for the last decades to use these few weeks in December and January to reevaluate, set intentions for the coming year, decide what to affirm or let go. Most years this has dealt with my creative/professional life. Some years community, family, relationships have been higher priorities.

The last several years have brought major challenges and changes in my personal life. Now it is time to refocus on the studio work.

Using “Janus” as a touchstone feels like a good framework for 2020.

Do you use a word, a concept, a resolution as you move into new beginnings?

PAINT! That’s my motto for this year. I’ve let the last year slip away with very little art-making. A few fabric wall hanging/collages, a few paintings done for others, and not much in the way of actually developing my work to a new level. I want to loosen up my watercolor style- as a detailed person, that is a HUGE challenge. But it’s time to focus on becoming more of who I am and allowing my creativity free reign.

Thanks for asking – I wasn’t consciously aware of what I just wrote. But I know it to be true!
